SURAT: After the serial blasts in Ahmedabad and recovery of live bombs in Surat, cops are now making desperate attempts to get hold of Imran Idrish Ansari, known to be held a key position in the banned outift Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Ansari is presently lodged in Sagar district jail in Madhya Pradesh for several criminal cases registered against him.
Senior police officials revealed that the legal proceedings have turned out to be a major roadblock in obtaining Ansari's transfer warrants. In May this year, Surat police had visited Sagar jail to get hold of Ansari but came back without success. Thrice earlier, Surat police has had to return empty-handed from Sagar due to "lack of support from MP police".
"As part of the investigation, we had come to know that some of those who were arrested had links with Ansari, a resident of Nayapura MG Road, Indore. But every time we try to get him here from Sagar, we are told by MP police that several offences are registered against him right from year 2000 and he is required for the investigation in Indore," said Athwagate police inspector MP Patel.
In May last, Athwagate police sub inspector DM Chauhan went to MP to get Ansari, but returned empty-handed as the MP jail officials said the Gujarat cops needed to produce court warrant , not the police transfer warrant.
"Police officials once again went to MP to get Ansari in January this year. To avoid any problems, the officials carried along the court warrant for his transfer to Gujarat. But by then, he was already shifted to another jail and the officials were asked to get production warrant and not the court transfer warrant ," police sources said.
